The changing picture for clean hydrogen
Event date
June 11, 2026
The clean hydrogen industry has progressed more slowly than expected in recent years, after a wave of hype crashed into the realities of high costs, regulatory uncertainty and a lack of demand.
But the picture seems to be changing, with the sector about to enter a new phase of growth.
EU 2030 mandates are driving demand for green H2, energy security concerns are pushing governments towards homegrown fuels, and regulatory changes that will lower the cost of so-called ‘renewable fuels of non-biological origin’ are apparently imminent.
At the same time, the comparatively lower costs of blue hydrogen are making it a more attractive prospect for many, especially in the EU, where new CBAM and ETS rules are making fossil-based fuels more costly.
So, to borrow from the Gartner Hype Cycle, is the clean hydrogen industry now leaving the ‘trough of disillusionment’ and heading up the ‘slope of enlightenment’ on the way to the ‘plateau of productivity’?
